Mystery Solved: Air Handler vs Furnace (Residential)

The video above, by Genteq Motors, gives a very good overview of how your average residential furnace works. For those of us, however, who has no life and would like to know more we will go into a little more detail in this article covering the history of heating homes to the difference between gas and electric.

Air Handler / Furnace
When you have electric heat it is called an air handler. When you have a gas heater it’s called a furnace. Up north you may have an oil burner, but that is also called a furnace. What they all have in common is a fan that circulates air in the house.

Port Eads – Site Visit

Late August Laponica Refrigeration went on a site visit to Port Eads Marina – the southern most point in Louisiana. Ole Andreas Haug, his wife Hoan, and Laponica’s famous tech Dennis went out to take measurements, view the area, and prepare for the future install of a freezer/cooler box. Well… Dennis went out there for that. Mr Haug, yours truly, and his wife went with Dennis for the trips sake. Port Eads is located an hour south of Venice, LA right before you get into the Gulf.

If you would like to know more about Port Heads, and High Adventure Company who now runs and maintans the location, you can visit their website at:

Keep an eye out for more photos. Our crew is scheduled to go down there Thursday November 20th. Photos should be posted sometime the week after.

Residential Service Plan

Prevention Reduces Costs

Many expensive air conditioning and heating repairs are caused by lack of proper service. Planned service reduces the number of emergency calls by revealing potential problems that can be corrected, before they become expensive, and thereby reducing major repairs and equipment replacements.

A service agreement with Laponica Refrigeration provides peace of mind through periodic scheduled inspections. Lubrication, adjustments, safety testing, and cleaning of your heating and cooling system will keep it running at peak, trouble-free efficiency. Potential problems are spotted before they cause trouble.

Know Everything!

Every inspection comes with a detailed checklist of what equipment or part needs immediate service and what can wait. Twice a year Laponica will schedule an appointment to inspect your equipment – one at the start of each heating and cooling season. Regular inspections serve the purpose of keeping your equipment clean and advising you of any needed repairs. No repairs are made without your approval! You will be provided a complete checklist of what needs immediate attention, to make your equipment work safely & efficiently, and what item(s) can wait.

All our service plans include:

    • Free service calls (Reg. $75)
    • Discount on Freon and repairs
    • Priority service for emergency calls
    • Check proper refrigerant charge
    • Lubricate motors (if required)
    • Check for proper voltage and amp draw
    • Check electrical connections and relays
    • Check Thermostat
    • Check condensate drains
    • Clean or replace filters (as needed)
    • Inspect condenser coil
    • Inspect evaporator coil (where accessible)
    • Perform system operational check
    • Detailed records and operating history for your review at all times

Hidden Benefits!

These types of agreements have some additional, less obvious, but still very real financial advantages. Properly maintained equipment will use less energy than ones that are not regularly serviced, resulting in lower utility bills. Even more significant, such equipment will last longer, lowering capital investment expenses. While budgets are still tight for most homes, equipment service and repair should not be an expense your family should worry about.

A service tech that is familiar with the system and has access to the equipment’s history does not need to spend time (money) trying to figuring out what has been done in the past. All our inspections are detailed and can serve as a visual aid for both the customer and the technician.

Call Laponica at 504-273-4013 or fill out a Request Service form to setup an informal meeting to discuss what service plan is right for you. One of our members will come out to your home and explain how our Residential Service Plans work. There’s no obligation and the visit is free. Whether you go with us or not your HVAC system, just like any another mechanical device, needs regular maintenance. Don’t wait until it breaks. Bad idea.
